The choice of coolant depends on the abrasive used:
- Aluminum Oxide: Oil, soapy water. In the case of Japanese stones (Shopton, Naniwa, Cerax based on aluminum oxide), partial soaking or adding water during sharpening is used.
- Silicon Carbide: Water
- CBN: Dry or with oil.
- Diamond: With soapy water or oil.
